Leg Instruction
Park your car just south of East Rook Gate at the top of the track (SX 60750 61240).
Follow the track up to the open Moor. Penn Beacon is visible to the NNW at the top of the hill.
It's a steady climb up to Penn Beacon and it's a great place to stop for a cuppa while admiring the views (as long as you ignore the china clay works!)
From here head north to Shell Top. There are well worth paths to follow so you don't have to endure the hillocks and squelchy ground.
Shell Top is a small Tor in a magnificant position. I could spend all day at this one spot and I think it's got one of the best views on the whole of Dartmoor.
Head NE to the Trig Point at the summit of 'the unnamed hill'
The ground changes a little from here. You need to aim for the head of the Yealm valley and the ground is thick with hillocks which always makes for hard walking.
The Yealm Valley suddenly appears from nowhere and the ground gets easier again (for a little while at least).
Stay high on the right hand side of the valley initially and follow the course of the Yealm for around half a mile. This keeps you out of the clitter that litters the side of the river.
After around half a mile, work your way down toward the river and the pretty little waterfall at Yealm Steps, a nice spot for lunch.
Follow a SW track to intercept the gate that'll lead you into Dendles Waste. From here there is a lovely track that leads you through the reserve and eventually you descend into Dendles Wood
Stay on the track which winds down and eventually brings you to the brook. Continue to follow the path (which is well signposted) and you will end up on a road.
Follow the road past North Hele Farm and ont to Hele Cross.
From here, stick to the road and navigate your way back to the car
